2026 Salary After Taxes

The nine states with no income tax on wages

Most take-home calculators hand you a federal-only number and then admit it is incomplete, because your state takes its own cut. In these nine states there is no state cut to take. Federal income tax, Social Security, and Medicare are the entire deduction list — so the figures on these pages are the answer, not an estimate you still have to adjust.

The same number in all nine

Because none of the nine touch wages, take-home pay is identical across all of them at any given salary — a $100,000 job pays $79,180 a year after tax whether it is in Dallas, Miami, or Cheyenne. The per-state pages carry the full $40,000$300,000 table plus what each state collects instead.

What "no income tax" does and does not mean

It means no state tax is withheld from your wages. It does not mean the state collects nothing from you. Every one of the nine replaces that revenue somewhere else — sales tax, local property tax, severance taxes on oil, gas, and coal, or levies aimed at visitors — so the bill arrives when you spend or when you own rather than when you are paid.

Two of the nine need a sharper description than the headline. Washington leaves wages alone but taxes certain long-term capital gains above an annual threshold, so a salary is untouched while a large stock sale may not be. New Hampshire never taxed wages, and its separate tax on interest and dividend income was repealed as of 2025 — older articles still describing New Hampshire as taxing investment income are out of date.

FICA does not vary by state. Social Security at 6.2% up to the $184,500 wage base and Medicare at 1.45% on every dollar are federal, identical everywhere, and they are the reason your take-home is well short of your gross even where the state takes nothing.

FAQ

Which states have no income tax on wages in 2026?

Nine: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming. Two carry a footnote worth knowing. Washington does not tax wages but does tax certain long-term capital gains above an annual threshold, and New Hampshire never taxed wages but did tax interest and dividend income until that tax was repealed as of 2025.

Why is a federal-only calculator exact in these states but not elsewhere?

Because in the other 41 states there is a second layer — a state income tax withheld from the same paycheck — that a federal-only figure leaves out. In these nine there is no second layer to add, so federal income tax plus Social Security and Medicare is the complete deduction list rather than a starting point.

Does living in a no-income-tax state leave you better off overall?

Not automatically. Each of these states funds itself some other way — sales tax, local property tax, severance taxes on mineral production, or tourism levies — so the money moves from your withholding to your spending and your housing costs. Whether the total is lower depends on what you earn, what you spend, and what you pay for housing, which is a household-by-household question rather than a state-level one.
