What to check next

The table converts a wage and stops there — it assumes 40 flat hours, no state tax, and no adjustments. Three things move the real number, and the first one is specific to people paid by the hour.

  • Hourly work is where overtime actually happens, and for 2025 through 2028 the premium half of time-and-a-half is deductible up to $12,500 ($25,000 on a joint return). Five overtime hours a week at $25 an hour is $3,250 of deductible premium; the table above taxes those hours as ordinary wages. Calculate your overtime deduction
  • If you are comparing an hourly job against a salaried offer, convert both to annual pay first. The salary table runs from $40,000 to $300,000 with the same federal assumptions, so the two sit side by side without recalculating anything. See the salary table
  • Pre-tax health contributions are the one deduction that also beats FICA, since payroll deductions come out before the 7.65%. At the lower end of this table that matters more than income tax does, because the standard deduction already shelters much of the wage. See 2026 HSA and FSA limits

FAQ

How do you convert an hourly wage to an annual salary?

Multiply the hourly rate by hours worked per week, then by 52 weeks. At the standard 40 hours that is 2,080 paid hours a year, so $25 an hour is $52,000. The shortcut people use — double the rate and add three zeros — gets you $50,000, about 4% low, because it assumes a 50-week year.

Does 2,080 hours account for vacation and holidays?

It assumes every week is paid. Salaried employees with paid time off still hit 2,080 paid hours, so the conversion holds. If your time off is unpaid, drop those weeks: two unpaid weeks makes it 2,000 hours, roughly 4% less than the figures here.

What assumptions does the after-tax column use?

Single filer, the 2026 standard deduction of $16,100, W-2 wages only, and no state or local income tax. Federal income tax plus Social Security (6.2%) and Medicare (1.45%) are deducted. Overtime, tips, bonuses, and pre-tax benefits are not included.
